Naturalisation and Citizenship

An application to hold an Irish passport is permitted after 5 years on certain types of reckonable (legal) residence in the Irish State. The application is made through the Immigration Service Delivery (ISD).

Naturalisation Benefits

  • It removes the Holder from the Irish immigration regime; as an Irish citizen you may reside and work in Ireland without being subject to Irish immigration control.
  • Additionally, Irish citizenship will convey citizenship of the European Union.
  • You may reside and work in other EU jurisdictions subject to EU Worker mobility regulations.

Naturalisation Criteria

  • You must show that you built up enough reckonable (legal) residence in the State to be granted citizenship, specifically 1825 or 1826 days of reckonable residence based on your accumulated permission stamps.
  • This includes 365 or 366 days (1 year) of continuous residence immediately before the date you apply.
  • Note that some types of permission stamp cannot be included when adding up your reckonable residence.

Naturalisation Challenges and Solutions

Long Term Residence (Stamp 4) and “Without Condition as to Time” (Stamp 5)

These stamps are available in circumstances were an applicant may not be able to avail of Irish Citizenship, for example where your country of nationality precludes holding dual citizenship. The application is made through the ISD and available to those with between 2 and 5 years (Stamp 4) and 8 years (Stamp 5) on certain types of reckonable (legal) residence in the Irish State.

LTR Stamp 4/ Stamp 5 Benefits

  • Both the LTR Stamp 4 and the Stamp 5 remove the Holder from the Irish Employment Permit regime. This allows work and residence in Ireland without an employment permit.
  • LTR Stamp 4 is issued in the first instance for up to 2 years, thereafter renewable.
  • The duration of the Stamp 5 is without condition as to time – it matches the duration of your passport.

LTR Stamp 4/ Stamp 5 Criteria

  • Depending on previous status held, the LTR Stamp 4 is available for applicants who have between 2 and 5 years legal residence in the Irish State under employment permit conditions. This is reflected in the corresponding Stamp 1, Stamp 4, Stamp 1G, and Stamp 3 endorsements in the passport.
  • The Stamp 5 is sought when you have completed 8 years legal residence in Ireland.

Stamp 4 allows non-EEA nationals to live and work in Ireland without requiring an employment permit. Stamp 1G is designated for dependents of Stamp 1 or Stamp 4 holders, enabling spouses and children to reside in Ireland alongside the primary visa holder.

The naturalization process in Ireland typically takes between 12 to 18 months from the submission of a complete application. Processing times can vary based on individual circumstances and the volume of applications received by the ISD.

Naturalization can present several challenges, including: Meeting Immigration and Residence Requirements; Document Preparation; and Application Accuracy.

At Actus, we specialize in overcoming these challenges by providing comprehensive support throughout your naturalization journey.

LTR Stamp 4 and Stamp 5 offer significant advantages for non-EEA nationals residing in Ireland:

Work and Residence Without Employment Permit:
LTR Stamp 4: Specifically allows holders to engage in employment without requiring an additional work permit. This facilitates easier job transitions and career growth within Ireland.

The Stamp 5 allows you to work and reside in Ireland without condition as to time.

Duration and Renewal:
LTR Stamp 4: Initially issued for up to 2 years, after which it is renewable. This status provides stability and the opportunity to plan for the future.

Stamp 5: The validity of Stamp 5 is directly tied to the duration of the passport into which it is placed. This ensures that the stamp remains valid for the entire period of the holder’s travel document.

Acquiring LTR Stamp 4 or Stamp 5 can be challenging due to the need to demonstrate that you have met previous immigration and residency requirements for the required duration. Additionally, presenting the correct documents to the ISD and ensuring accuracy on the application form are critical factors that applicants must carefully consider.
