DETE Defers Minimum Annual Remuneration (MAR) Increases for Employment Permits
The Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment (DETE) has announced a deferral of planned increases to the Minimum Annual Remuneration (MAR) for employment permits, originally scheduled for January 2025. This decision allows time for a comprehensive review of the current framework.
What Is the MAR?
The MAR is the minimum salary threshold required to qualify for an employment permit in Ireland. The last MAR increase came into effect in January 2024 as part of a phased plan to align with rising average earnings nationwide. The roadmap for MAR adjustments was outlined in the December 2023 Outcome of the Review of the Employment Permits Occupations Lists.
While these changes aimed to address wage disparities, economic challenges such as rising business costs have prompted the Department to reconsider the pace of future increases.
Key Details of the Deferral
- Pause on General MAR Increases: The planned MAR increases will not take place in January 2025. Instead, DETE will conduct a review to balance the needs of businesses and employment permit holders.
- Exception for Care Sector Roles: The MAR increase to €30,000 for Health Care Assistants, Home Carers, and Care Workers will proceed as planned in January 2025. This sector has been prepared for the change, and the adjustment addresses specific labor shortages.
How Does This Impact You?
Employers and stakeholders now have an opportunity to provide input on the future of MAR adjustments. The review will ensure adequate preparation time for businesses while continuing to support employment permit holders in Ireland.
Have Your Say
The Department welcomes feedback from employers, employee representatives, and other interested parties regarding the MAR increases. This is your chance to shape policies that impact Ireland’s employment landscape.
